Rhinebeck singles, Red Hook doubles go far

Rhinebeck tennis performed well in Mid-Hudson Athletic League competition.

And they made a little history doing so.

Rhinebeck junior Carol Tyson became the second girl in league history to contend for the MHAL boys title on May 7 at the MHAL tournament held at SUNY New Paltz. Tyson beat Luca Balboa of Spackenkill 6-3, 1-1, in the quarterfinals of the tournament, and Onteora’s Mike McCann 6-3, 6-2 in the semis before falling to Roosevelt ace Jonah Berkowitz in the finals, 6-3, 6-2.

“I’ll say that I’m impressed by what she’s able to do and how she’s grown as a player,” Rhinebeck head coach David Jutton told The Observer. “To make it to the finals in a year with a really good draw and beating some tough opponents. She played very well to get to the finals.”

In the singles tournament, Rhinebeck’s Alec Gautier made it out of the round of 32, beating Millbrook’s Ben Salander, 8-2, before falling in the round of 16 to Red Hook’s Johnathan Lindholm-Uzzi, 6-1, 6-1. Aaron Hoffman of Rhinebeck also competed, but failed to get out of the round of 32, losing to Saugerties’ Corey Curran, 9-7.

The Hawks had two doubles teams competing in the tournament, including the duo of Will Fox and Eliot Hoffman, who fell to Avery Leighton and Jordan Bock of Onteora in the round of 32, 8-2; and Emily Sullivan and Madeleine Olsen, who fell to O’Sian O’Reilly and Alex Smalley of Pine Plains, 8-2.

“I thought our team played well. Very tough matches at the tournament,” said Jutton, “We’re happy with how people played.”

The Red Hook Raiders put up a strong fight in the tournament, too. Lindholm-Uzzi faced Roosevelt’s Berkowitz in the semifinals, losing 6-3, 6-1. Aside from beating Gautier in the round of 16, he beat Darshan Rammohan of Highland, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis.

Red Hook’s Joe Bryant fell to Luca Balbo of Spackenkill in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-4.

On the doubles front, Red sent the team of Ethan Longenecker and Brian Messmer to the finals, where they lost to the Spackenkill brother-act of Frank and Justin Lin, 7-5, 7-5. To get there, Messmer and Longenecker beat Connor Shaeffer and Susanna Gerner of Rondout Valley, 8-4, in the round of 32; Leighton and Bock of Onteora 4-6, 6-2, 13-1, in the round of 16; John Ackerman and Jay Gohel of Roosevelt, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9, in the quarterfinals; and Alex Daponte and Shawn Kollesar of Spackenkill of Spackenkill, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Raider duo Templeton Kay and Christian Rohrmeier fell to Avery Herzog and Lane Sulzer of Saugerties, 8-5, in the round of 32, after making it out of the first round by beating Jordan Arndt and Jake Collins of Wallkill, 8-2.
