In its first game in the Class A division, the Franklin D. Roosevelt High School football team showed little rust with the change, cruising to a season-opening 28-0 victory over Port Jervis High School Sept. 6 in Port Jervis, N.Y.
“I think in the first quarter, we came out kind of slow,” head coach Brian Bellino told The Observer. “But we [the team] recovered mentally and got a great first win.”
The Presidents saw contributions in a variety of ways.
Senior running back Dan Pelkey scored the first FDR touchdown of the season in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the Presidents got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Avery Strother and Justin Hoskins, respectively.
Strother was an offensive force for FDR the entire night. The junior running back had 152 yards on 26 carries, along with his touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, safety Nick Amone intercepted a pass and returned 95 yards for touchdown to cement the victory for the Presidents.
Amone (two interceptions, eight tackles) led a strong defensive effort by the Presidents, and their speed and toughness impressed their coach.
“Those guys played a heck of a game tonight,” Bellino said. “We have some real hitters on that defense.”
FDR will be back in action on Sept. 12, traveling to Middletown to take on Middie Bears for a 7pm kickoff. Middletown also stands at 1-0 on the season after defeating Washingtonville, 21-14.
