$100,000 state grant to enhance Hyde Park’s commercial area

State Senator Terry Gipson presented Hyde Park town leaders with a $100,000 state grant on Oct. 21 for infrastructure improvements along the Route 9 business corridor in town.

In his remarks at Hyde Park Town Hall, Gipson acknowledged the work done by Supervisor Aileen Rohr and the Town Board to secure the funding from the New York State Economic Development Assistance Program.

“Only a few towns did the necessary research for grants and we were very impressed with the diligence of the Hyde Park administration that qualified them for the award,” he said.

He added, “As a ranking member of the N.Y. State Local Government Committee and a member of the Tourism Committee, I know the impact and potential Hyde Park has in growing our regional economy.”

According to Councilwoman Emily Svenson, 70 percent of the award will go toward street improvements along the commercial areas of Route 9, which could include curbing, on-street parking, and sidewalks.

“We are hoping to enhance our commercial area and make it more business friendly,” said Svenson, adding that the town will be working directly with the state Department of Transportation on any upgrades since Route 9 is a state road.

The remaining $30,000 will go toward a study for designing modern sewer systems for commercial hubs in the business centers along Route 9.

Rohr accepted the award for the town and said, “This check, which Senator Gipson said is a small one, will be a huge benefit to our community and will assist us in planning infrastructure changes for the commercial development of our town.”

The state grant came directly on the heels of two Dutchess County shared services grants totaling more than $500,000. They will be used for automated salt spreaders, to be shared with Poughkeepsie, and for software upgrades to town systems, which Hyde Park will share with several other municipalities in the county.
