The Red Hook woman accused of killing two Bard College students in a late-night Route 9G hit-and-run appeared in Tivoli Court Tuesday and surrendered her license.
According to local media reports, Carol Boeck, 63, was accompanied by her attorney, Michael Pollok, in her brief appearance before Village Justice Howard Clark.
Her case now goes before a Dutchess County grand jury who will decide whether she stands trial.
Boeck is charged with felony DWI and vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of Evelina Martin Brown, 20, of Seattle, and Sarah McCausland, 19, of Winnetka, Ill. The felony drunk driving charge follows a prior conviction in 2005 for a misdemeanor DWI.
The two first-year students were walking south along the southbound lane of Route 9G in Tivoli at 11:50pm Friday, according to the county Sheriff’s Office. A spokesman for Bard has said they were headed for the Bard shuttle, which stops just south of the Broadway (West Kerley Corners Rd.)-Route 9G intersection.
They, and a third student, Selena Franden, were struck by a southbound vehicle, which then fled the scene, according to a sheriff’s report. Brown and McCausland died at the scene; Franden suffered a knee injury.
Boeck has reportedly pleaded not guilty. She is free on $50,000 bail.
