FDR tennis duo reaches finals in Section 9 championship games

FDR was the only one of the local tennis teams that came close to stealing a championship at the Section 9 Boys Tennis Tournament in Goshen May 20 and 21.

The Presidents’ doubles pair of John Ackerman and Dan Considine beat Maxx Thueson and Philip Spear of Valley Central, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of 16 and then beat John Hagerdorn and Finbar Stuart of Onteora, 6-2, 6-2. Ackerman and Considine made it to the finals, where they fell to two Cornwall whiz-kids, eighth grader Dan Leach and seventh grader Lucas Arora, 6-3, 6-2.

FDR’s other doubles squad, that of David Tran and Zack Foster, won in the Round of 16 against New Paltz’s Patrick Varruzza and Elijah McKee, 6-2, 6-4, but fell in the quarterfinals to the Pine Bush duo of Tyler Dupee and Aidan Hrynda, 6-2, 6-3.

No other local players made it past the quarterfinals in singles play.

Carol Tyson of Rhinebeck beat Dharshan Rahmohann of Highland, 6-3, 6-3, in the Round of 16, but fell to Tyler Reede of Newburgh Free Academy, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Jonas Lindholm-Uzzi of Red Hook’s Raiders keyed Jake McSpirit of Minisink Valley, 6-0, 6-0, in the Round of 16, but lost to Danny Parris of NFA 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. Raider Joe Bryant fell in the Round of 16 to Troy Chuckran of Port Jervis, 6-2, 6-3; and Jay Gohel of FDR lost to NFA’s Reede, 6-0, 6-1, in the Round of 16.
