The Red Hook girls lacrosse team is on track to do something that no Section 9 team has ever done: win a regional game in the state tournament today.
Red Hook remains undefeated in 2014, compiling a 16-0 record with their win against Millbrook May 22 at Dietz Stadium. The victory, by a score of 10-9, by far the Lady Raiders’ tightest game of the season.
The Lady Raiders have found themselves in a similar position at the end of every season since 2011, but haven’t been able to close the deal. Like their boys lacrosse counterparts, Red Hook is historically vexed by out-of-section opponents.
The 2014 team might buck the trend, though: the Lady Raiders have hung tight with all sectional foes, and beat non-sectional Glens Falls, 17-4.
They play Albany Academy in the regional semifinal at Dietz Stadium at 5pm.
Albany Academy is a team the Lady Raiders have plenty of experience with. They’ve met in the postseason three times, the most recent being 2013’s regional semifinal duel, which Albany won in overtime, 11-10.
Yvonne Turchetti, Red Hook’s head coach, has been at the helm for each of those games.
“They’ve played a similar style of play. They’re a physical team, they like to double and triple the ball. It’s good to know that going in. We need to ball coming in,” said Turchetti before the game. “We need to focus on ourselves and executing.”
