Bard volunteer fair Tuesday, Sept 27

The Bard Center for Civic Engagement presents a Volunteer Fair on Tuesday, September 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Red Hook High School Cafeteria. Hudson Valley community agencies, community services, governmental agencies, libraries, and nonprofits will join to recruit volunteers from the Northern Dutchess County region. Students, seniors, and all community members who are interested in connecting with organizations seeking volunteers are encouraged to attend. For more information contact Erin Cannan, associate director for the Center for Civic Engagement, at cannan@bard.edu, or 845-758-7454.

The Volunteer Fair provides an opportunity for community agencies to connect with interested volunteers and includes representatives for services for animals, children and adolescents, culture and the arts, families, historic preservation, housing, literacy, medical emergencies, mental health, senior citizens, and sustainability.

“Like an internship, volunteering gives you real-world work experience and helps in résumé building,” says fair coordinator Erin Cannan. “But a volunteer also gains a more personal connection to the community. It’s a great way to get to know other people who are doing good things in interesting organizations, and to learn more about where the linkages are in the local community.”

Participating organizations include: Northern Dutchess Caregivers Coalition, Rhinebeck Committee on Aging, Hudsonia, Safe Haven Animal Shelter & Wildlife Haven, Red Hook Community Arts Network (CAN), Red Hook Community Garden, Baptist Home Brookmeade, Wells Manor, Red Hook Public Library, Dutchess County Habitat for Humanity, Columbia County Habitat for Humanity, ReStore, Hudson River Maritime Museum, Thomas Cole Historical Site, Cider Mill Friends, Walkway over the Hudson, Red Hook Bicentennial Committee, Battered Women’s Services, Dutchess County Interfaith Council, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Medical Reserve Corps of Dutchess County, Ulster Corps, and Ulster Community Action, among others.

Sponsors for this event include: The Bard Center for Civic Engagement, Red Hook High School, Red Hook Chamber of Commerce, Bard Office of Sustainability, Earth to Table, Red Hook Library, and Red Hook Together. Underwriting has been provided by Hannaford’s, Holy Cow, Rusty’s and Village Pizza.
