William J. Hester, 79

William J. Hester, 79, a longtime Red Hook resident, passed away on Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany after a courageous fight with cancer.

Born on March 30th, 1932, in Hudson, NY, Bill was the son of Alene (Gillette) Hester and the late Edward Dennis Hester. Bill served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954 and
dedicated his professional engineering career to IBM in Kingston, NY for more than thirty eight years where he made many life long friends.

Bill was a devoted member of St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook for more than 50 years, as was an active member of the St. Christopher’s Church Choir and its Holy Name Society. Bill was a fixture at Church activities such as its Sunday Breakfasts and the towns Hardscrabble and Apple Blossom days.

He was an avid gardener, golfer, fisherman and wood carver and loved spending time with his family and volunteering for activities with his church and community.

Bill married Judith Kriss on October 28, 1961 in St. Mary’s of the Snow in Saugerties, NY and she survives at home in Red Hook, their life long home.

In addition to his loving wife of 50 years, he is survived by his four children; Deborah L. Hester- Smith and her husband David of Kingston, Carolyn J. Hester of Red Hook, William D. Hester and his wife Raquel of Meriden, CT, Gregory S. Hester and his wife Amy of Marlborough, CT, seven grandchildren; Evan, and Lindsay Smith, Bryson, Alexis, Cole, Logan, and Lucas Hester, two brothers; Edward Hester of E. Greenbush, NY, and Richard Hester and his wife Ruth of Brackney, PA, and a sister; Marjorie Kitsock of Hudson, NY. Along with many nieces and nephews, he is also survived by his many church and school day friends that he would see regularly.

A Mass in celebration of Bill’s life will be offered at St. Christopher’s Church, Red Hook, NY on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Immediately following the mass will be a brunch in his honor at St. Christopher’s School. Family and friends are welcome.

There will be no calling hours.
