Red Hook high school students who attempt a full International Baccalaureate Diploma have all succeeded, in what may well be some sort of world record.
The diploma involves completing advanced coursework in six distinct areas (language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, experimental sciences, mathematics and computer science, and the arts). Additionally, all students must complete a Theory of Knowledge course that includes a Community Action Service Project and a 4,000-word essay. All final assessments are evaluated and graded by external evaluators from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
Since 2004, Red Hook Central School District has had 99 students attempt the full diploma. To date, all the candidates received the diploma –which is a 100 percent completion rate.
“This is a remarkable achievement, given the New York State completion rate of 69 percent and the worldwide rate of 79 percent. Red Hook’s 100 percent completion rate is a testament to the strength and quality of our educational program,” Superintendent of Schools Paul Finch said in a news release.
“We thank the community for its continued support of this important program. It has allowed our full diploma candidates, as well as hundreds of other students, to access rigorous college-level curricula while attending Red Hook High School,” he added.
