Barrett, Gipson heading to Albany

President Barack Obama and New York’s junior U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand easily clinched their second terms in office in the national elections Nov. 6, but some local races were much closer and, in some cases, have yet to be decided.

Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, a Democrat, was re-elected without opposition and will begin representing both Red Hook and Rhinebeck (along with much of Ulster County) in January.

Millbrook resident Maria Rosa, a Democrat who also ran on the Working Families, Independence and Conservative lines, was elected to serve on the State Supreme Court.

For residents of Red Hook, Rhinebeck and Milan, there were four competitive races to watch.

Congress: Chris Gibson vs Julian Schreibman
State Senate: Stephen Saland vs Terry Gipson
State Assembly: Didi Barrett vs David Byrne
County Legislature: David Sherman vs Debra Blalock
