The Raptors got 15 points from Powell.
Facing the run-and-gun attack of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Jan. 22 proved to be too much for Bard, as the Engineers pressed and ran their way to an 80-56 victory.
RPI (9-6, 4-2 Liberty League) raced out to a 17-5 lead and never looked back, forcing 13 first-half turnovers and holding Bard to 14 first-half points. Bard managed 42 second-half points, but a season-high 29 turnovers doomed the Raptors.
RPI got points from 13 players and none played more than 15 minutes. Chris Almodovar (El Paso, Texas) led the Engineers with 12 points.
Bard got 15 points from McNaughton and 13 points and seven assists from Powell.
And on Jan 25, Bard went up against the Hobart College men’s basketball team, the preseason favorite and the current first place team in the Liberty League. The Dutchmen held off a Bard charge in the second half for a 62-45 win.
Even though Bard had one of its best-shooting games of the season (46 percent). Hobart had a 31-22 edge in rebounds and only turned the ball over twice to improve to 10-6 overall, 6-1 in the Liberty League.
Hobart pushed a 17-point halftime lead to 22 early in the second half, but then Bard held the Dutchmen without a field goal for more than eight minutes and trimmed the lead to 11 with 6:57 remaining. The Raptors couldn’t get any closer, however.
Junior Richie Bonnie (Norwich, N.Y.) led the winners with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Bard got 18 points and five rebounds from sophomore Siondueh Burnette (Lakeville, Mass).
Then on Jan. 26, Rochester Institute of Technology finished the game on a 13-3 run to pull out a 64-57 victory over Bard.
Bard’s McNaughton’s second straight three-pointer tied the game at 57-57 with two minutes left, but the Raptors didn’t score again. RIT sophomore Scott Desmond (Murphy, Texas) hit a three-pointer with 1:41 left, and Bard missed its next two attempts before sending RIT to the line in the waning seconds.
Bard hit a season-high 11 three-pointers but was outrebounded, 31-21, and RIT collected 13 offensive boards. The Tigers were led by junior Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, N.Y.), who had 20 points. RIT is 6-11 overall, 2-6 in the Liberty League.
Bard (now 4-13, 1-9 Liberty League) got 14 points from McNaughton, 12 from Powell and 10 from Burnette.
