Bard women basketball team bested 5 in a row

The Bard women’s basketball team matched their male counterparts in losing all five of their Liberty League games in the past two weeks.

A 13-0 run over a seven-minute stretch late in the first half broke open a close game Jan. 18 and led the Union College women’s team to a 48-29 victory over Bard.

It was a 10-9 game midway through the first half when the Dutchwomen put together a run that made it 35-17 at halftime. The Dutchwomen (10-5, 5-2 Liberty League) shot a scalding 62 percent from the field in the first half, led by Shayla Madden (Niskayuna, N.Y.), who made 3-of-5 three-pointers and had 11 points after 20 minutes.

Bard never threatened in the second half. The Raptors shot 21 percent from the field for the game. Freshman Tytravia Riley led Bard with nine points and 12 rebounds.

Madden and Kelsey McDonald (Cornwall, Conn.) each finished with 13 points, and Brittney Kenney (Branford, Conn.) led the winners with nine rebounds.

Next up, on Jan. 19, was the Skidmore College team, who went on a 10-0 run over the first three minutes and never looked back en route to a 63-35 victory over Bard.

The Thoroughbreds (8-8 overall, 6-1 Liberty League) held Bard to 2-for-26 shooting in the first half and had a 36-14 edge at halftime.

Skidmore got scoring from 11 different players, led by freshman Skylar Caligaris (Cambridge, Mass.), who had nine points. The Thoroughbreds entered the game as the top team in the league at shooting three-pointers, and they went 13-for-30 against Bard.

Bard got 11 points and 16 rebounds from Riley and 10 points from Victoria Fleisher (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

On Jan. 22, a 24-2 run by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute over a seven-minute span early in the game set the tone, and Bard lost 68-35.

Bard turned the ball over seven times in the first seven minutes as the Engineers (10-5, 4-2 Liberty League) raced out to a 45-14 halftime lead.

RPI graduate student Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, Mass.) led the Engineers with 16 points after scoring 10 in the first seven minutes. Freshman Ashley Clough (West Chesterfield, N.H.) added 10 points and six rebounds.
