A sunny and pleasant Memorial Day in Rhinecliff set the scene for local ceremonies that began at 9am at the memorial between the Rhinecliff Post Office and the Morton Memorial Library.
A short parade was followed by a modest but moving ceremony, including patriotic music and singing, a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps all in homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. About 100 residents attended the ceremony in the small hamlet.
“We pray that no one in battle for our nation will ever die in vain,” said Reverend Robert Vanderlaan during his benediction. “On this day of remembrance, guide us and sustain us as we hold up our inheritance of freedom, defend it, invest it and share it with the world. For if we can do that, then Memorial Day will be more than just a big auto race, flowers on graves, flags on houses and cars on highways.”
