Rhinebeck village officials are beginning a crackdown on illegally parked vehicles.
Last year, the village installed signs that restricted parking adjacent to intersections and also installed two handicapped-accessible crosswalks in the downtown business district.
“Due to the fact that people are ignoring the signs and pavement markings, we are now going to be targeting those individuals that are breaking the law,” Mayor Jim Reardon announced in a news release. “These signs are there for a reason, to provide adequate sight lines so that motorists have a clear view at intersections and can see pedestrians when they enter the crosswalks.”
Reardon added, “There has been a rash of occurrences over the last several weeks and several near-misses at the crosswalk locations, and we will not tolerate this type of behavior. I personally have witnessed it and when I asked one individual to please move their car out of the designated crosswalk zone, they asked me if I was a cop…There seems to be a pervasive entitlement mentality on some individuals’ part that the law does not apply to them.”
“The law is the law,” he said. “Either abide by it or pay the price.”
Reardon noted, “We are prepared to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of the public.”
