Construction of the new athletic facilities at FDR High School in Hyde Park is expected to be completed in time for pre-season football next month.
The $4.8 million project, which started in March, is on budget and scheduled to be finished when football starts in the third week in August, according to Wayne Kurlander, the school district’s assistant superintendent for business.
The new facilities include a turf field with lines for football, soccer and lacrosse, and an eight-lane 400-meter track. The field and track are being built to state standards so the district would be able to host state championship games and meets, Kurlander said.
The construction also includes stands, a press box, lights, and a retention pond down by North Park Elementary School.
The cinder track that the school previously had in place didn’t allow for home track meets, and school officials hope that the new facilities will raise school spirit as well as save money if they don’t have to bus the track team to away meets for every game.
The fall sports that require the facilities do have back-up schedules, consisting of all away games, in case the project is delayed.
