Red Hook water line insurance offer not needed, village officials say

Recent mailings that were sent to Red Hook residents offering insurance coverage on homeowner-maintained water lines were not endorsed by village officials.

Members of the Village Board are advising homeowners that the coverage is probably unnecessary.

Although water lines connecting from the meter to the main line are considered the homeowner’s responsibility, Mayor Ed Blundell said that the depth of the water lines — 4 feet below grade — means that the line won’t freeze or be damaged by vehicles or other heavy objects.

“This isn’t something we solicited or are recommending to people,” said Blundell said at the Aug. 5 village board meeting. Blundell added that he had no knowledge of the company, Home Serve USA, or why they sent out mailers in Red Hook.

The installation of new water meters throughout Red Hook is one possible explanation for the targeted advertising.

Trustee Steven Zacharzuk said that he had been approached by multiple residents inquiring about the insurance policy.

“I told them it wasn’t something I had knowledge of,” said Zacharzuk.

Home Serve USA is headquartered in Stamford, Conn., according to the Better Business Bureau website, which has notes of caution from Florida and Connecticut about the company’s solicitations.
