Planners approve new Roosevelt District fire station

Hyde Park planners have okayed a new fire station in town.

At their Aug. 8 meeting, the planning board gave site approval for the new station at 830 Violet Ave. It would replace the existing one, known as Station #3, on Roosevelt Road. That station, originally built in the 1950s and expanded in the 1960s, is aging and lies on a flood plain, which has resulted in several evacuations.

Estimated cost for the new station is $4.5 million.

The planners also approved amendments to the site plan for Rock Ledge Plaza, just north of E. Market St. on Route 9G.

The amendments included: removal of the existing standing sign; removal of the existing finish and replacement with cultured stone siding and an overhanging sign; installation of a sidewalk to increase ease of access to the arcade; and use of previously “dynamited” rock face for signage purposes, which does not comply with current zoning law but existed when the current owner originally purchased the property.

In other business, the board postponed discussion of McDonald’s request for additional signs for its Route 9 restaurant. Because there were 10 proposed signs on one variance, the board did not feel they were able to give each sign proper consideration.

There were several issues, topped by the question of the size of a sign near the road and whether it would spell out the word “McDonald’s” or just the “M” or the company’s “golden arches” logo.

Some board members had issues with the variances and wanted fewer new signs or none at all. For this reason, the discussion was held off until the next hearing.
