Rhinebeck trashes village pickups

Rhinebeck’s trash and recycling pickup service for village residents is history.

Cardboard pickup ended last week, and trash, bottle and can pickup ended yesterday, Aug. 27, according to an announcement by Mayor Jim Reardon.

Residents should contact private haulers to arrange for future pickups, Reardon said.

The elimination of the garbage service was decided by village officials in May as part of the effort to keep the tax levy for the 2013-2014 budget within reason. The service was used by fewer than half of its residents and cost the village thousands of dollars to maintain, Reardon said at the time.
