Bard women soccer team ties in Classic win

The Bard College women’s soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with host Plattsburgh State on the final day of the Cardinal Classic Sept. 7.

Sophomore Abbey Labrecque (Battle Creek, Mich.) and junior Joanna Regan (Selden, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament team.

On the first day of the Classic, Sept. 6, the Bard team was shut out, 2-0, by Oswego State.

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in that game in the 26th minute when senior forward Nikki Liadka (Liverpool, N.Y.) ripped a powerful shot from just beyond the box and beat Bard keeper Kelsey O’Brien (Southampton, N.J.).

In the 39th minute, Oswego State made it 2-0 when junior Bri Dolan (Fayetteville, N.Y,) chipped a pass from freshman Dana Pitts (Endwell, N.Y.) over O’Brien’s head as the keeper came rushing out to gather a through ball.

Bard had three shots in the first 37 minutes, then didn’t have another shot until 45 minutes later. In the end, Oswego State outshot Bard, 8-6, and corners were even at 1-1. Shots on goal were also even at 4-4.

Alyssa Glasshagel (Coram, N.Y.) and Steph Houghtaling (Fulton, N.Y.) split the goaltending duties for the Lakers, making two saves apiece. Lily Harris (Charlotte, Vt.) made two saves for Bard in the second half.

In non-league play before they entered the Classic, the Bard team shut out SUNY Cobleskill, 8-0, on Sept. 4, with senior Maddy Huggins (Mukilteo, Wash.) scoring three goals and sophomore Mady Calhoun (Riverton, N.J.) adding two assists.

It was the largest margin of victory for Bard since an 11-0 romp over Bay Path in October 2011.

Single goals were scored by Isabel Keddy-Hector (Driftwood, Texas), Sylvia Kool (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Hallie Holan (St. Louis, Mo.), Gina Lewis (San Ramon, Calif.) and Sam Lagville-Graham (Centereach, N.Y.). Bard outshot Cobleskill (0-2) 51-0.

That victory followed the team’s defeat three days earlier when the Albertus Magnus women’s soccer team got a goal from senior Amanda Roke (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 76th minute, then hung on over a wild last few minutes for a 2-1 victory.
