Sporting clays tournament a fund-raising blast for Boy Scouts

The Rip Van Winkle Council of Boy Scouts will hold its fifth annual Sporting Clays for Scouting tournament Fri. Sept. 27 at the Orvis Sandanona Shooting Grounds in Millbrook.

This fundraising event helps support more than 2,000 area youths active in the council’s Scouting programs, is underwritten by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management of Kingston, and is open to all.

Sporting clays has been described as “golf with a shotgun,” where clay targets are thrown in a variety of trajectories, speeds and elevations. “But you do not have to be an experienced shooter or even own a shotgun to participate in this event — it is for shooters and non-shooters alike,” said Scout Executive Ray Braun.”

The cost of the tournament is $250; participants get breakfast and lunch, and shells for the course. Prizes will be awarded for different skill levels. There will also be a raffle drawing for a Special Edition Ruger Boy Scout 10/22 Rifle, donated by Ruger.

All proceeds from the tournament will be used to directly support youth and Scouting programs in the Hudson Valley. For more information or to reserve a place in the tournament, contact the Council Scout office at (845) 339-0846 or by email at rabraun@bsa.org; or visit the council’s website at: www.rvwbsa.org.
