The Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School volleyball team defeated Rondout Valley 3-1, in sets of 25-12, 25-14, 25-15 at home on Tuesday afternoon. The Presidents are now 10-0 on the season, and remain at the top of the Mid-Hudson Athletic League.
The opening set of the match began with back-and-forth play between FDR and Rondout, before the home team went on a 4-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. Following a Rondout timeout, the Ganders scored two straight points to close the gap. But the Presidents used a 5-0 run to eventually win the set, 25-12.
Rondout got on the board first in the second set, but FDR once again jumped out to a big lead, thanks to outside hitter Shannon Kelly. The senior co-captain finished with 20 kills and two aces, with the majority coming in the second set. A 25-14 victory gave the Presidents the opportunity to sweep a match for the ninth time this season.
However, the Ganders would not leave without a victory, as they went on to win the third set, 25-20. It was just the third set loss of the season for FDR, and its second-lowest point total in a match.
In the final set, FDR started off on a 6-0 run, a deficit that Rondout could simply not recover from, losing 25-15.
In addition to Kelly, FDR got solid contributions from Sarah Hof (seven kills, seven assists, two blocks, and an ace) and Bri LaMonica (18 assists).
Next up for FDR is rival Spackenkill, the other top team in the division at 11-1. The match will be played at Spackenkill High School on Thur., Oct. 3.
