“The Science of Design” is the theme for this year’s Rhinebeck Science Foundation (RSF) Discovery Festival, which will take place Sat., Nov. 16 from 10am to 2pm at the Rhinebeck High School.
The free event, open to everyone, will include hands-on activities for K-12 students as well as design competitions for different age groups. Presenters will showcase design solutions in technology, the arts, science and other disciplines.
Victor Britton, a physics teacher at Rhinebeck High School and a presenter, noted in a foundation news release, “The Discovery Festival provides children and their families a chance to learn about some of the science in their world, talk about it and ask questions. I have volunteered as a presenter at the past four RSF Discovery Festivals and each one has been an exciting chance for me to share what I enjoy: science.”
Other presenters include high school students from Rhinebeck and Bard College students. The Bard students also served as design mentors to younger students, helping them with their design contest entries.
“Tech savvy, artistic and creative, Bard students are intrigued with the very questions that Rhinebeck students will explore. The collaboration helps our students better understand how to explain key design concepts while honing their teaching and leadership skills,” said Erin Cannan, associate director for the Bard Center for Civic Engagement.
