They’re one of a kind

Joanne Capalbo-Flachs hit the vintage circuit hard. At the height of her business, she was doing 18 to 20 shows a year on the road, meeting new friends and having a blast.

“It was exhausting, but I loved every minute of it,” Joanne said in a news release. “If it was vintage, people wanted it.”

Joanne’s selections — from New York designer dresses, to French handbags, lingerie and pantyhose — were always immaculate. “Some vendors were selling dirty and damaged clothes and making money at it. “People knew my clothes were the real deal, and that was good for my business,” she said.

At the Red Hook Emporium, Joanne’s clothes are as pristine and beautiful as ever. Joanne, a former Pratt instructor and clothing designer in her own right, brings a treasure trove of designer dresses, shoes, coats and culottes, some of which have never been worn. Her “shop” at the Red Hook Emporium has a similar feel to her previous store, La Vie En Rose, which was in Red Hook from 2000-2008 and in Rhinebeck before that.

Customers may be pleased to know that Joanne’s gorgeous clothes have simply moved, the news release from The Emporium noted. The new arrangement allows Joanne to spend more time with her family and to continue making custom clothes for clients.

Pati Podell is a serious beader; that much is evident. And once you realize that the jewel-encrusted bracelets, wire-wrapped pendants, and long crystal necklaces are all made by the same person, you’ll begin to understand why Pati Podell is a force to be reckoned with.

Pati’s counter at the Emporium glitters with the gems inside. And jewelry-lovers may be pleasantly surprised at the low cost of owning a wearable piece of art. Though Pati travels cross-country to find beads and gems for her creations, she purchases many of her beads and supplies at the “bead shop” at the Emporium.

Not to be missed also is her lovely display of hand-knit baby-sweaters embellished with adorable sheep and flower buttons, stars, bears, baby-approved “brooches” and more. The sweaters on display fit size 0 – 6 months, are washable, and many come with matching hats.

The Red Hook Emporium is thrilled to showcase the work of local artisans like Pati. Manager Jen Bulay said in the news release, “We want people to see for themselves what the Red Hook Emporium is really about. All of our dealers bring a flair and expertise, and we’re glad they chose us.”

The Emporium also features handmade furniture, turned wood crafts, aromatherapy, numerous antiques and art, and much more. It’s an ideal place to buy one-of-a-kind gifts for any occasion.
