Water emergency in Hyde Park, southern Rhinebeck

The Dutchess County Water and Wastewater Authority issued an emergency advisory Thursday to its water customers in Hyde Park and southern Rhinebeck, asking them to immediately reduce their water use until further notice.

In a news release, the authority said the intake pipe in the Hudson River has a restriction that limits the amount of water that can be treated at the Hyde Park treatment plant, and the divers needed to clear the intake screen are being hampered by ice in the river.

The affected areas include: the Hyde Park Water System (formerly the Hyde Park Fire and Water District), the Staatsburg Water System (including areas in the southern part of the Town of Rhinebeck), Zone L and the Harbourd Hills/Zone D Water System.

Suggested reductions in water use by the water authority include: limiting or postponing use of dishwashers and washing machines, limiting or postponing backwashing filters or water softeners, postponing vehicle washing, and making sure unused taps are completely shut off.

“Customers will be notified when the situation returns to normal,” the news release said.
