Hudson River sweep set for May 10

The 2014 Riverkeeper Sweep, the third-annual day of service for the Hudson River estuary, will take place on Sat., May 10.

The Riverkeeper Sweep is a Waterkeeper Alliance SPLASH Series event, presented nationally by Toyota. SPLASH events engage local communities nationwide in water-based activities and clean water action, and this is the signature event for New York City and the Hudson Valley. The kickoff event will be held at Randall’s Island Park on Friday, May 9.

Last year, Riverkeeper Sweep engaged more than 1,400 volunteers, who removed an estimated 38 tons of trash and planted more than 300 trees in 72 shoreline locations on the Hudson River and its tributaries. So far this year, more than 70 communities have already registered cleanups.

Riverkeeper relies on local volunteers to help organize service projects. If you’re interested in organizing a Sweep in your community or becoming a sponsor for the event, contact Dan Shapley, Dana Gulley or Annette Fay at sweep@riverkeeper.org, or 914-478-4501 (x222 for Dana or x226 for Dan).

Local sponsors already include Williams Lumber, Pleasant Valley Stone and Mother Earth’s Storehouse.
