Red Hook girls 4-0 as lacrosse season starts

The Section 9, Class C girls lacrosse fields have been owned by Red Hook for the past three years. And if the first quarter of the 2014 regular season docket is any indication–especially the Lady Raiders’ latest18-5 bashing of league opponent New Paltz April 11–it’s going to be another gem of a season for a team that has won three straight sectional championships.

With the win over New Paltz, Red Hook sits at 4-0 on the season. The team beat the Saugerties Sawyers, 14-12, in Red Hook’s season opener at home April 3. They trounced Cornwall 18-5 April 7, and Goshen 17-5 April 9.

Against New Paltz, the Lady Raiders took a couple of minutes to get things moving, but once they hit their stride, there was no stopping them: in a span of about two minutes, the Lady Raiders flushed four goals, two from Ciara Burud at 19:38 and 19:05, and one each from Lindsay Hobson and Marist Parr, at 19:10 and 19:05, respectively.

Burud, on her way to a seven-point game, which led all scorers, had five of her goals in the first half. Parr, who scored five overall, had three.

In the second, Red Hook let up, but only slightly. The Lady Raiders scored eight of their 18 in the period. All but two goals came from Burud, Hobson, and Parr in the game, and they were from Aleksia Cvijic at 4:59 and Kaleigh DelGuidice with :14 left in the game.

While Red has no problem on the scoring front, head coach Yvonne Turchetti told the Observer that her team’s defense was tested by the New Paltz Huguenots.

“I know we won by a lot, but they made our defense work hard today. They made our defense work harder than they have in the last couple games. I’m glad that we got challenged at both ends of the field. But I’d like to see more hands get more touches,” said Turchetti, referring to her Burud-Hobson-Parr-centric scoring system.

Turchetti said that the transition from 2013 to 2014 was hard, but that the team has settled into a new groove and is clicking well.

“We’ve really been putting the pieces together. You start in gyms and on blacktops, not on the field. It really exposes a lot of things you need to go into and work on. But I’m really pleased with the girls’ work ethic and intensity so far. I know we’ve had some lopsided games, but they’ve brought a lot of effort throughout. They’re putting things together. They’re making mistakes, but we’re coming together well,” she said.

While Turchetti is happy with her team’s success–and counts winning the Class title again as one of Red Hook’s goals in 2014–she’s willing to share the love to help see girls lacrosse gain more momentum in the Mid-Hudson region.

“What I personally, as someone who loves this game and as someone who wants to see lacrosse excel in the area, want is to see other teams in the area that are doing well. Burke is strong, Millbrook is really good this year. We need them as a sport, and this area needs them,” she said.
