The opening of the 2014 Bard SummerScape festival on Friday, June 27 signals the return of the much-acclaimed Spiegeltent, which will again be hosted by cabaret artist and Tony-nominated performer Justin Vivian Bond.
Situated near the college’s Fisher Center, the Spiegeltent offers a magical environment for cutting-edge cabaret and world-class live music, plus spectacular circus acts, dancing, and dining throughout the eight-week festival, which runs through Aug. 17.
The tent’s stage hosts a selection of entertainers on Thursday and Friday evenings and weekends all summer long. Friday and Saturday nights (as well as the opening Thursday night) are adult-oriented, with Spiegeltent Cabaret offering sophisticated entertainment. Erstwhile teen star Molly Ringwald and “punk-cabaret pioneer” Amanda Palmer are among those making their SummerScape debuts, while returning acts include the political and irreverent variety show Weimar New York, the popular Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and folk icon Martha Wainwright. The lineup also includes international cabaret stars such as Meow Meow and Joey Arias.
