Honored to be there

A would-be War World II bomber flight crew was on hand to greet Rhinebeck resident Ruth Milliot, the oldest female Marine veteran in the country, with smiles at the National World War II monument in Washington, D.C., Sept. 27. Milliot, who turns 104 on Oct. 22, was one of 85 World War II veterans who attended the Hudson Valley Honor Flight, a one-day trip to show retired service personnel their country’s gratitude, according to Congressman Chris Gibson’s office. The Honor Flight tour also stopped at the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, where a special Honor Flight wreath was displayed during the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Milliot, who was a staff sergeant with the Marines, now lives in the Thompson House nursing facility at Northern Dutchess Hospital.
