The New York State Department of Health has confirmed that the UK variant of COVID-19 has reached Dutchess County. The UK variant is more contagious that the original version of the virus but experts say that existing vaccines are still effective in protecting against the variant.
“With confirmed cases of the variant in neighboring counties, it was expected we see cases in Dutchess County,” Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro announced in a statement released on Saturday. “This is an important reminder that, despite the lowering positivity rate and vaccinations underway, the fight against COVID is not yet over. We must stay vigilant – wear your mask, wash your hands, respect your health and the health of others.”
One hundred thirteen new positive tests for coronavirus were reported on Saturday, Feb. 20 in Dutchess County for a positivity rate of 4.6%, according to the NYS Department of Health.
On Friday, the most recent data posted by Dutchess County, the number of active cases being monitored by the county was 1107, an increase of 107 from the previous day and COVID-19 hospitalizations were at 55, a drop of 9.
There was 1 new death attributed to the disease reported by the county.
Over the previous seven days, an average of 2,826 live virus tests were given to county residents each day. Compared to three weeks earlier, active cases were down 28%, hospitalizations were down 64% and there had been 47 new deaths caused by or related to COVID-19.
