Girls Basketball: Red Hook defeats the Lady Bombers, forces tiebreaker

Red Hook’s Lady Raiders (11-5) beat the Pine Plains Lady Bombers (5-11) in a 49-19 rout Saturday night at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, held at Bard College’s Stevenson Gymnasium. The win clinches a Mid Hudson Athletic League division championship tiebreaker for Red Hook against FDR.

Red Hook controlled the game from all angles. The Lady Raiders pushed the ball every chance they got, nabbing the rock from Pine Plains on several errant bounce passes and running a fast break offense that the Bombers just couldn’t keep up with. Red Hook also ran a press defense in the first quarter that left Pine Plains struggling to muscle the ball past quarter court.

The Lady Raiders capped the first with a 17-0 lead. The Lady Bombers would never really recover; their most productive sequence came against Red Hook’s second team in the second quarter. The Lady Bombers simply could not handle Red Hook’s high tempo style of play. Pine Plains was a wreck under the basket, too, failing to capitalize on several easy ten footers and layups – often not even hitting the rim while under single coverage. Pine Plains’ offense came almost exclusively from senior Jordyn Funk, who played a solid game under the hoop and netted 13 of the team’s 19 points.

Red Hook showed some mercy in the fourth, slowing down the game and Pine Plains put up 6 points.

The Lady Raiders will play the FDR Presidents on Monday the 13th in Millbrook at 6pm for the division title.
