Red Hook’s Kyla Gabriel drained a fifteen footer at the buzzer to win the MHAL Division I Championship 34-32 over FDR in a game held in Millbrook Monday night.
FDR’s defense was dominant in the first quarter, running heavy picks and preventing the Lady Raiders from finding any space in the middle, as well as challenging every mid-to-long range shot Red Hook hoisted. Red Hook, in frustration, over-committed on defense and sent the Presidents to the line regularly.
The Lady Raiders couldn’t pull it together in the second quarter, either. Red Hook’s first low post points of the game came at 5:08. They continued to miss every perimeter shot and sent FDR to the line on a sloppy shooting foul with :08 left in the half. The Presidents went back to the locker rooms up 16-15.
Red Hook’s offensive woes continued into the third. The Lady Raiders’ low post game was non-existent as it seemed neither team could make a shot; the first field goal of the period was a Red Hook three-pointer at the 4:15 mark. Nevertheless, Red Hook finished the quarter leading 24-20.
The tone of the game changed in the fourth; both teams tightened up their shooting and completed crisp perimeter passes. In the middle of the fourth, the Presidents managed a clutch put back to tie it up at 26.
Sienna O’Han missed the free throw on a three-point play attempt that would have given the Lady Raiders some breathing room with 2:05 left on the clock. FDR made two free throws with seconds left on the clock. Red Hook pushed the ball up court and dished the ball to Kyla Gabriel who, under double coverage, put down a turnaround fifteen footer as the clock ran out. Gabriel led the Raiders with 9 points.
The Lady Raiders will play MHAL Division II champion Highland Tuesday at 5pm at SUNY Ulster in Stone Ridge.
