On Tuesday, March 20, voters will head to the polls in a special election to fill the New York State Assembly’s empty 103rd district seat. The off-cycle campaign is seeing Didi Barrett and Rich Wager vie for the position, which has been vacant since Marc Molinaro stepped down in order to assume his responsibilities as Dutchess County Executive this past January.
Didi Barrett, a resident of the Town of Washington, is running on the Democratic and Working Families line. Barrett currently serves as a consultant for non-profit organizations. She also sits on the board of the Anderson Center for Autism Foundation, the Millbrook Education Foundation and the North East Dutchess Community Fund. In 2010, Barrett mounted an unsuccessful bid for the New York State Senate seat held by Steve Saland.
Barrett is squaring off against Richard Wager Jr., also a Washington resident, running on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines. Wager has formerly held positions in both the Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations in New York City and is the son of former Poughkeepsie Journal publisher and Gannett News Vice President Richard Wager Sr. He is currently a consultant at a major investment management firm.
The winner of the election will serve out the rest of this year and faces another election battle this November. With the assembly and senate district lines still unresolved, the candidates do not know what district they might be facing later this year.
Polls open at 6am and close at 9pm.
