For the 26th consecutive year, the Town of Red Hook Conservation Advisory Council (CAC) is seeking applicants for scholarships for a one week ‘sleep away’ camp at a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Education Summer Camp. The two scholarships are sponsored by Red Hook VFW Post 7765.
Applicants must be Town of Red Hook residents or attend school in the Red Hook Central School District, and be between the ages of 11-13 (must be 11 by 12/1/2012). Successful applicants will be selected on the basis of answers to 3 short answer questions. Click here for essay form. The completed application should include 1) the short answer form and 2) the DEC camp form. Click here for DEC Camp form.
Completed applications must be returned to the Town Clerk by 4pm on March 21, 2012 or emailed to lauriehusted@gmail.com. Winners will be selected and notified by the end of March – admission to the camp is on a rolling basis; award of scholarship does not guaranty a spot in the camp.
The camp is sponsored by and staffed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Activities combine recreational events, such as hiking and canoeing, with instruction on ecosystems and resources. DEC operates four residential camps for youth ages 11-13: Camp Colby in Saranac Lake, Franklin County; Camp DeBruce in Livingston Manor, Sullivan County; Camp Rushford in Caneadea, Allegany County and Pack Forest in Warrensburg, Warren County. Additional information and descriptions of the camps and activities can be found at the NYSDEC website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/education/29.html.
