The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will be conducting the NYS Safe Boating Course at the Sheriff’s headquarters located at 150 N. Hamilton Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. Two separate sessions of this eight-hour state certified course will be conducted. The first session has already been completed. The second session will be Friday April 27 from 6pm-10pm and Saturday April 28 from 9am-1pm.
The course is designed as a comprehensive boating course, teaching the fundamentals of safe boating and personal watercraft operation. Topics of instruction include, but are not limited to, equipment, navigation, operations, rules of the nautical road, and emergencies. Completion of the course is required for all operators of personal watercraft age fourteen and older and operators of motorboats between the ages of 10 and 18. The class is open to persons age 10 and up.
There is no cost to attend the course. However, those 18 years of age and older who successfully complete the course must forward $10 to the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation in order to receive their permanent safety certificate card.
