The Bard College women’s basketball team won its first-ever Liberty League game on Jan. 11, beating Clarkson University by a score of 52-46.
Freshman Tytravia Riley (Miami, Fla.) scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Raptors to that victory.
Bard never trailed, although the game was tied three times in the first half. The Raptors held a five-point lead at halftime; that grew to 10 at one point, but Clarkson (2-9, 0-3 Liberty League) never got closer than five the rest of the way. Freshman Bianka Bell (Stamford, Conn.) added 10 points.
Freshman Ashley Loggins (Colonie, N.Y.) had 11 points and 11 rebounds when she fouled out of the game for Clarkson with 4:45 remaining. She sat out almost 10 minutes of the second half with four fouls.
The game was Bard’s only victory in their first five outings in the league, which they joined last year.
In their league debut, Bard was held to a season-low in points and outrebounded for a season-first as Skidmore College, also in their league debut, won by 59-36, on Jan. 4.
The game was close early, tied at 15-15 midway through the first half. But Skidmore (3-7 overall, 1-0 Liberty League) went on a 10-0 run over a five-minute span and eventually took a 28-21 lead into halftime. The rebounding edge after 20 minutes was 23-10 in favor of Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds, who shot 44 percent from the first in the first half, made five three-pointers in the second half and grew their lead to 10, then 15, and the largest deficit was the final score, 23.
All 12 players who played for Skidmore scored, led by freshman Amber Holgate (Easton, Mass.), who had 10 points. Skidmore won the rebounding battle, 37-29.
Bard got 16 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and a block from Riley, who entered the game as the national Div. III leader in rebounds per game with 17.8. Victoria Fleisher (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added seven points.
The following day, Jan. 5, a 21-5 run over a seven-minute span in the middle of the first half broke open a tie game and spurred the Union College women’s basketball team to an 81-48 victory over Bard.
Winners of seven straight, Union (8-3 overall, 4-0 Liberty League) shot 58 percent from the floor in the first half. It was 7-7 about seven minutes into the game, but Union took off from there, outscoring Bard 33-14 to take a 40-21 halftime lead. Bard never got closer.
