Mill Road School mural to be celebrated with ceremony

The large and colorful mural decorating one outdoor wall at Red Hook’s Mill Road Elementary School will be officially celebrated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 27.

Mill Road Principal Erin Hayes and the muralist, Andres San Millan, who is creative director of the Cocoon Theatre in Rhinebeck, will officially present the mural, “Joy of Learning,” to the public and school community at 4pm.

The ribbon-cutting will be followed by remarks from Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, Principal Hayes, and Superintendent of Red Hook Central School District Paul Finch, as well as Marguerite San Millan, president of Cocoon Theatre, and the artist himself.

San Millan is well-known to the Red Hook community for his giant sculpture “MANN,” which resides on the lawn at Taste Budd’s coffee shop.

He was commissioned by Hayes and the B.L.T group to create the 15X25 foot mural, with funds contributed by the P.T.A, according to a news release.

In the news release, Hayes said, “In addition to the aesthetic effects, we worked on the curriculum connection of the mural to our classrooms. We have plans to use the mural in literacy as a writer’s workshop response, exploring descriptive attributes, creative storytelling, personal reflection, etc; in art class looking at textures and mediums to designs and shapes; [and] in social studies [through] discussions tying in our community themes.”
