Hyde Park’s Little League Junior All-Stars made it to the top, handily winning the District Championship by blanketing Lagrange, 11-0, on July 6 at Dutchess Stadium.
The victory for the Junior League 14/15 squad came after a solid run-up of wins: they keyed Wappinger, Dover, and Fishkill each by five runs or more.
Regional play for the Juniors then took place over four days: they beat Pine Bush 3-1 in their opener on July 13; got blanked by Haverstraw, 10-0, on July 14; beat Pine Bush once more on July 15, 11-1; but were bounced from the tournament by Haverstraw, 12-0, on July 16.
Overall, the Hyde Park Little League, which annually hosts 400 baseball and softball players, had an energetic tournament season this time.
The local teams compete in Little League’s New York District 17 post-season double elimination tournament. All the tournament teams are composed of All-Stars from different age divisions.
The 9/10 boys lost their first game to Lagrange but won their next two games in the single-loss bracket against Philipstown and Pawling, and faced Fishkill on June 29, beating them 9-2. They next faced Red Hook on July 1 and beat them 14-13. They were eliminated in the semifinals by Lagrange 12-2.
The Major League division (11/12) boys fell 31-1 to Wappingers in the opening leg of their tournament, but burned off three wins in the single loss tournament over Pawling, Pleasant Valley, and Rhinebeck, before losing in the semifinals, 12-2, to Lagrange on June 28.
The Senior League division baseball (15/16) was out of the tournament in three games; they lost to Lagrange and beat Red Hook, but fell to Lagrange, 7-5, on June 29 for their second and final loss.
Even though the league didn’t field a softball team this year, because of low enrollment rates, some upper level softball players did compete on the District level.
