Tough season for Hyde Park swim comes to close

The Dutchess Ulster Swimming Organization (DUSO) championships, held at the Ulster Pool Complex in New Paltz July 26, effectively shut the door on the 2014 swim season. The meet, dominated by DUSO juggernaut New Paltz and undefeated Red Hook, also featured the Hyde Park team, along with those from Kerhonkson, Hurley, Rosendale, Zena, and Rhinebeck.

The championships were a little wetter than expected, with inclement weather, which has been a fixture in the 2014 DUSO season, affecting the first half of the meet.

Altogether, however, 2014 was a tough go for Hyde Park. The Stingrays failed to wrangle a win after losing to Rhinebeck and Zena at the beginning of the season. Hyde Park fell to Kerhonkson on July 12, New Paltz on July 13, Hurley on July 16, Red Hook on July 19, and Rosendale on July 23.

Hyde Park, one of the smaller DUSO teams, has trouble competing against larger stables, and head coach Sarah Izzo acknowledged that at the DUSO championships.

“We’re really, really small, which makes it hard to win meets,” Izzo told the Observer.

But she added, “We have a really great team. …We’ve got a lot of team spirit and we have a lot of fun. Today, we’re doing great. We’re setting a lot of best times.”
