Learning the ropes

The workshop is an overview of different kinds of juried shows, including group juried shows and even online juried shows, as well as entry procedures and how to photograph your own work for entering juried shows.

Harrison noted that learning to photograph your work is important for many reasons. “It helps for people who just want to have portfolios or put up their work on websites,” she said.

The most important aspect, which Harrison said will be repeated over and over again, is how to read a prospectus and how to follow the rules strictly. She also includes a section on why artwork may get rejected. “I have a handout and do a little bit on my computer where I show work that came to me that was rejected right up front. I explain why it missed the mark,” she said.

The cost for the workshop is $30, and reservations can be made by e-mailing Harrison at julietharrison@earthlink.net or calling 845-758-2667. Participants can even register Saturday morning. Harrison also advised artists to bring a chair to the gallery. “The gallery only has a few,” she said.
