Red Hook wrestlers split opener

“We tried our hardest, but we could’ve done a lot better,” wrestler Dan Ducey told the Observer.

Red Hook head coach Nick Fredericks said, after the Highland match, that there were solid reasons for Red’s loss despite the fact that “most of the guys showed a lot of heart.”

“Going out there, we were outnumbered; a lot of injuries, we didn’t have guys to fill certain spots,” Fredericks told the Observer. “When you give a team 18 points, you need a lot of wins, and a couple of guys lost when we really needed wins. We were on our heels tonight – it was a tough match.”

But Fredericks noted, “I think we have a better team.”

And he added, “Once guys get healthy, we can be in the weight classes we should be in. And once we’re there, we’ll do fine for the rest of the year.”

With their win against Burke, and the positives of their meet with Highland, Fredericks said, “The guys, at the end, didn’t give up. At the end, even though we were mathematically out of it at a certain point, the guys just kept going on – winning and pinning. Taylor Benson, 8th grader, 106, locked up the cradle and pinned the other kid (who is) in 10th grade. He’s got no fear out there, he’s undefeated right now.”

Fredericks added that after Christmas break, Red will be shifting wrestlers to different weight classes to fill vacant spots. “We’ve got some learning to do,” he said. “But we’ll be there.”
